Water and Energy
Water and energy are essential resources that are used in our production cycle. We are committed to reducing our absolute and/or per ton production water and energy consumption by 10% by 2024, through developing and promoting solutions that support efficient and responsible energy and water use.

During 2020, despite production enhancement we have succeed to decrease our energy consumption and maintain water consumption at similar level. The multiyear analysis of normalized values shows a steady decrease of normalized water consumption, and no increase in normalized energy use.
Reducing Water and Energy Use
Water Reclamation
Water reclamation projects allow us to reuse wastewater and wash-water, reducing the environmental impact of discharged water, and saving the consumption of freshwater.
- At the Makhteshim site, we reuse our wastewater following advanced treatment: we operate a reverse osmosis desalination facility to treat our wastewater following a biological wastewater treatment plant (B-WWTP). The reclaimed water is utilized at the major production facility onsite.
- At the Agan, Londrina, and Madrid sites, we reuse wash-water.
- At the Poland site, we recycle water back into the production process.

Energy Cogeneration
Cogeneration is an environmental improvement, as it allows us to use the same energy twice. Steam that is used to generate electricity is reused by our facilities for heating processes.
Two cogeneration power plants, running on natural gas, supply electricity and steam to our Makhteshim and Agan facilities, which accounts for 83% of our total electricity consumption and 93% of total steam consumption. This has allowed us to reduce our fossil fuel use, and indirectly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35%.

Green Energy
The transition to cleaner energy consumption is part of our long-term goal to reduce our impact on the environment. Our production sites in Spain and Brazil Utilized renewable resource-based electricity throughout 2018-2019.
- At our Spain site, we switched to 100% renewable resources, based on solar panels and wind turbines.
- In Brazil, we purchased electricity that was mainly generated by a hydroelectric power station, combined with biomass combustion resources.
Looking forward: 2020-2021 energy conservation actions
- We are conducting an energy survey within our production sites to identify energy-inefficient equipment, such as medium to large motors, and will replace existing lighting systems with LED technology.
- We are planning to replace low energy-efficient chlorine gas production technology with modern membrane technology, potentially saving up to 45% energy usage.
